Gufkral
A second early village site, named after its caves.

Gufkral, which means cave of the potter, lies south-east of Srinagar. Like Burzahom, it shows people moving from pit dwellings to houses above ground, and from hunting to farming and herding, over many centuries.
Facts
- Its earliest layer has no pottery at all, which makes it one of the oldest farming settlements in the region.
- Finds include bone tools and the remains of domesticated sheep and goats.
