Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Founder of the Sikh Empire, which ruled Kashmir from 1819.

Ranjit Singh united the Sikh confederacies into an empire ruled from Lahore. After taking Kashmir in 1819 he governed it through appointed governors. Kashmiri shawls were among the prized goods of his court.
