Shankaracharya Temple

The temple sits on the hill Hindus call Shankaracharya or Gopadri and many Muslims call Takht-e-Sulaiman, the throne of Solomon. Tradition places a shrine here in very ancient times, and connects the hill with a visit by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. The building that stands today is reached by a long flight of stone steps.

Facts

  • It is one of the most visible landmarks in Srinagar, overlooking Dal Lake and the city.
  • Estimates for the present structure range across many centuries, and parts were repaired in later periods.
