Jahangir

The emperor who fell in love with Kashmir.

Jahangir travelled to Kashmir again and again and wrote about its flowers, springs and seasons in his memoirs. His gardens at Shalimar and Verinag set the pattern for Mughal Kashmir. He died in 1627 on his way back from the Valley.

Facts

  • A famous Persian couplet, 'If there is paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here', is often said to be his words about Kashmir.
  • His court painters recorded Kashmir's birds and flowers in detail.
