Khanqah-e-Moula

A wooden mosque and shrine honouring Shah-e-Hamadan.

Sultan Sikandar built the first khanqah here in 1395, on the riverbank where Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani is said to have prayed. The building has burned and been rebuilt more than once. Its tiered roof, carved wooden walls and painted interiors make it one of the finest examples of Kashmir's wooden religious architecture.

Facts

  • The present building dates mostly from the 18th century.
  • The walls inside are covered with painted and lacquered panels in the Kashmiri papier-mâché style.
